We were very blessed at the recent Combined Camp at Concorde Hotel, Shah Alam (Malaysia). About 200+ campers from all three congregations were gathered. Every session was interpreted into Mandarin, which worked well. Many were able to interact more closely across congregations and I am sure the bonds formed can be further strengthened with future opportunities.
In the opening session, I spoke on what the theme, “A Cord of three strands is not easily broken” and the passage in Ecclesiastes may mean for us. It tells us how much we need ‘the other’ as no person can be strong alone. This however, goes beyond just human friendships, as our unity and depth is found in our relationshiop with Jesus (the ‘3rd strand’). The closer we are with the Lord, the stronger our relationship with each other. Helping each other to grow in a living faith with Jesus is essential. The 3rd strand can also represent our common vision. A shared vision will strengthen unity.
Pas Chris Kam (from DUMC, PJ – left in photo, with Pas Huang interpreting) took two sessions. In the first he spoke on the father heart of God and how we fathers also reflect that to our kids. He taught on some important principles and spoke intimately on how he fathers his own children.
In the second session, he spoke on addictions and gave some practical tips on how we can grow in holiness. Many found his practical messages helpful and some came forward for prayer during the altar call. Pas Daniel Ho, the senior pastor of DUMC took one session. He shared on DUMC’s growth journey and the importance of vision and passion in ministry. He also spoke on the need be a personal evangelist through the daily opportunities. We were indeed challenged to also believe the Lord for evangelism and growth breakthroughs. On the last evening, we had a fun but meaningful dinner event. It ended with every member putting their lights on a table, signifying our parish unity. On the last morning, I shared on the church building project and five year vision. Pas Huang Ao You gave the message during the Holy Communion, reminding us that the strong must always remember the weak.
We are appreciative of the Camp Committee for their hard work: Pas Henry Yeo, Pas Nicholas Chung, Pas Simon Chan, Audrey Ho, Junxu Lye, Jesse, Chip Hong, Joyce Teo, Ng Hong Kai, Jixuan, Warren Mah & Eugene Tan. Members of the worship teams from the three congregations also served together to give us a unique experience of worshipping in bi-lingual.
