David also said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work for the service of the temple of the LORD is finished. The divisions of the priests and Levites are ready for all the work on the temple of God, and every willing man skilled in any craft will help you in all the work. The officials and all the people will obey your every command.” 1 Chronicles 28: 20-21
At our recent staff planning retreat, I shared from this passage on how it was Solomon’s privilege to follow on from the groundwork done by his father, King David. Everything has been prepared and all Solomon needs is the courage and faith to see it through.
We can sense that we too are at the same juncture. So much has happened to lead us to this point. We have a freehold site, a strategically located church and a new building project on the way. We will have a MRT station next to us soon. As for our church, we have been gifted with so much. We have established and fruitful ministries, gifted leaders and a congregation with passion and talents. And the list goes on.
And we asked ourselves, in the next five years, what does the Lord want to do in and through this parish? What vision is He stirring in our hearts? What dreams will we dare to grow in our hearts? If so, what should we be focused on? To do any less is to miss the Lord’s kairos purpose for the church. To settle with any less will be poor stewardship over the gifts and potential the Lord has given us.
With these thoughts, the staff has begun to engage in a process of clarifying the vision for our church for the next five years (and in some areas, beyond). By January of next year, we will be ready to share with the whole church. Till then, we need to continue to seek the Lord, listen to each other and get our fingerprints all over this vision so that our body of leaders (including PCC and other lay leaders) will own and be challenged by it.
Continue to pray that we will “not be afraid or discouraged, but be strong and courageous, and do the work.”
